A Message from the President

Let’s face it, most presidential webpages sound the same. But Maryville University isn’t like every other institution, and neither is our story. Here, it’s about you – your goals, your dreams, and your lifelong learning journey. Our approach to higher education is different: at Maryville, education isn’t just a moment in time; it’s a commitment that lasts a lifetime. We’re here for you, wherever life takes you, with dedicated faculty, innovative technology, and personalized support that will be available to you 24/7/365 — forever.

My name is Dan Shipp (please just call me Dan), and I am proud to serve as the 11th President of Maryville University. I am following a true legend in today’s higher education orbit, Dr. Mark Lombardi, and am honored to build on the legacy he created. I serve alongside a rowdy team of educators who are dedicated to making life better for the many students and communities we serve around the world.

Students and families, we are excited to meet you and learn about your individual stories—your hopes, dreams, and goals. Joining the Maryville family today will open the door to a lifetime of learning and achievement. What are you waiting for? Come join the higher education revolution with us at Maryville University!

Once a learner, always a learner,
Dan

One Word Project

Think about the pivotal moments in your life that have shaped who you are today. Now imagine if you had to exchange your name for One Word that truly captures the essence of who you are right now.

Dan’s One Word

My one word is “essential.

I selected essential as my one word because it describes a way of living that prioritizes serving, helping, and supporting others to live well and thrive—especially family members, close friends, neighbors, and many others throughout the world I will never have the privilege to meet and/or know.

To me, the word essential is both an aspiration and an action. It involves a “we before me” approach that leads to a healthier “you.”

As an educator, I can think of no higher calling than helping others learn and develop into essential humans. This is the life and work I am committed to.

We + Me = You
