Max Wagener, of Maryville M1 Hockey, recently made waves on the international scene, representing not only the Saints, but all of the United States at the World University Games. The games are the largest international winter multi-sport event for student-athletes, consisting of 13 sports and 96 medal events.
While the rest of the Maryville Hockey team was competing in their regularly scheduled season, Wagener was in Torino, Italy playing on Team USA, leading the team in points with four goals and four assists. This builds upon the already impressive display he has put on for the Saints, leading with 28 points in 20 games.
Over two weeks of time, Wagener and the rest of Team USA saw action in nine total contests, the highlight coming when Team USA upset Slovakia in pool play via a 6-5 win that was decided by shootout on Jan. 15. Wagener was instrumental to the upset, scoring both goals in the shootout to secure the win.
With Wagener back and only five games left in the regular season, the top 10 M1 Saints (16-7-2) hope to finish off the season well and make a deep run at the 2025 ACHA Men’s 1 National Tournament, hosted in St. Louis, MO at the Centene Community Ice Center and the Maryville University Hockey Center starting March 13. Maryville is back in action next weekend, Feb. 7-8 in Minot, ND as they will take on the #1 Minot State University Beavers.
