What’s your Maryville experience?
Maryville was not only an educational experience but a therapeutic journey, offering me a space to build long lasting relationships and explore the art of leadership on a deeper level. The support from faculty and peers, along with an environment that prioritized both learning and wellbeing, left a lasting impact on my approach to education and leadership. Dr. Bear and the entire team were approachable and relatable.

What’s your favorite Maryville memory?
One of my favorite memories is engaging in group projects that allowed us to tackle real-world educational challenges. These collaborative experiences helped me cultivate HEARTWORK—a commitment to leading with empathy and compassion—and reinforced the idea that education is everyone’s business.

What are you doing now?
I currently serve as the Assistant Superintendent of Cahokia Unit School District 187, where I lead with high levels of emotional intelligence, particularly in academic strategy, trauma-informed care, and crisis management. I’m also the founder of Through the Eyes of Child, LLC, an educational consulting firm dedicated to supporting teachers and aspiring and current school leaders in education. In my personal life, I enjoy supporting my husband’s business, Shahid Painting and Decorating, LLC.

Additional goals and aspirations?
My mission is to transform educational spaces by advocating for marginalized voices and developing trauma-informed, inclusive policies that foster resilience and belonging in school communities. I strive to lead with compassion, knowing that education must be approached holistically for lasting change.

How did your education and experience at Maryville help you?
Maryville’s innovative approach to education, grounded in real world application, instilled in me a strong sense of leadership and a high level of emotional intelligence—both essential for effective, empathetic leadership. The relationships I built and the invaluable learning experiences I gained continue to shape my career and consulting work.

Words of wisdom for today’s students?
Pursue your passions with HEARTWORK, integrity, and an understanding that education is everyone’s business. True success lies not only in academic achievements but in building a legacy of empathy and empowerment that uplifts others. The This I Believe project can be life changing—allow it to ground your work.
