Designing involves awareness, intentionality, objectivity, creativity, critical analysis, evolution, implementation, and technical skill.
Maryville University’s interior design program is one of the highly rated design schools in the Midwest and St. Louis region with its national Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD) accreditation.
Students earning a bachelor’s in interior design learn about the application of basic design principles and elements to the built environment and learn to understand interior volumes, spatial relationships and application of color theory.

PROJECT-BASED
LEARNING
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design program includes the study of research and visualization methods, architectural principles, human factors, color, lighting, and the latest computer-aided design technologies. Students also develop a diverse and professional portfolio and participate in the senior show. A required senior capstone project is the culmination of a student’s design skills, techniques, practices, creativity and values.

PARTNERSHIPS
Maryville interior design majors acted as design professionals to establish a new home for the Chinese Education and Culture Center in St. Louis. This professional practice allowed students to experience the design process through experiential learning with the Culture Center.
Maryville has also partnered with corporate and civic organizations in the region including Normandy High School to provide students with opportunities to experience hands-on involvement in real-world projects.

Professor Mike Keller is a practicing architect and painter with experience in many project types and media. In the practice of architecture he is focused on integrating technical solutions with thoughtful design. He has helped design work on the Chongwe School in Zambia, Africa for African Visions of Hope.
