Maryville University, twice named by U.S. News & World Report as the #1 Overperforming University in the nation, is located in the west St. Louis County suburb of Town and Country, about 20 miles from St. Louis, Missouri. The Active Learning Ecosystem is how we engage with our students by utilizing Active Learning pedagogies, valuing innovation and risk taking as paramount to the learning experience, engaging with technology meaningfully, and providing inclusive classrooms. Approach 1: Teaching and Learning
At Maryville, teaching and learning is at the center of all we do. Each year, Maryville faculty participate in a minimum of 70 hours of professional development all seeking to inspire one another and become inspired about the latest in teaching research, teaching technologies, and educational design and theory.
Approach 2: Innovation and Risk Taking
Maryville faculty know that challenging students to take ownership, intellectual risks, and accountability for their education is paramount in order to provide the most meaningful learning experience to our students. A Maryville graduate is a graduate who is prepared for for the world and the future.
Approach 3: Technology
Through the meaningful use of technology in multiple modes, Maryville faculty utilize the iPads and other digital resources to provide students with learning opportunities and experiences that broaden their horizons while connecting them with their communities and the world.
Approach 4: Diversity and Inclusion
By celebrating diverse perspectives, Maryville faculty incorporate learning experiences that are inclusive to all students at Maryville and reveal cultural understandings that may be new to our students. A diverse and inclusive learning environment incorporates appreciation for various approaches to learning.

Faculty Guides/Faculty Development Committee
The charge of the faculty development committee is to support faculty members in the development of the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary for achieving their professional goals both within and beyond the classroom.
Thus, the responsibilities of the faculty development committee are as follows:
1) To assess what professional interests and goals exist for faculty and what supports can be offered in helping faculty to achieve those goals2) To create programming, training, and other miscellaneous supports to allow for increased faculty engagement and achievement within those identified areas of interest and need. This may include collaboration with other standing committees or subcommittees
3) To routinely monitor the efficacy of the work of the faculty development committee in supporting the professional goals and achievements of faculty colleagues
4) To solicit nominations for and select the winner of the annual Anna Moudy Faculty Award

Teaching and Learning Colleagues
In spite of what one often hears, the old adage that (outstanding) teachers are born, not made simply isn’t true. Outstanding teaching, actually just plain good teaching, takes practice and hard work. Perhaps of upmost importance, good feedback from those who know good teaching can improve the ease and effectiveness of the course design and classroom teaching aspects.
The Teaching and Learning Colleagues work with all faculty to help each of us increase our level of understanding into our own teaching and student learning. The TLC work with new faculty, as well as returning faculty, in developing a strong collegial relationship and discuss teaching and learning with you. St. Louis as your classroom
We like to think of St. Louis as a vast laboratory, a place where our students apply classroom theory to invaluable real-world situations with hundreds of companies and institutions. Rawlings Sport Business Management majors have interned at Rawlings Corp., the St. Louis Cardinals, and many other sports-related organizations locally and across the nation. St. Louis delivers plenty of opportunity for practical career experience.
