Set yourself apart as one of the country’s most promising young minds through the Maryville University Distinguished Fellowships Program. This program is designed to help our most talented students compete for distinguished fellowships, such as the Truman, Goldwater, Udall, and Rhodes Scholarships. Distinguished Fellowship nominees from Maryville are talented, independent, and diverse. Winning one of these awards takes you to graduate study at world-renowned academic institutions or to travel in a foreign country where you will have the opportunity to enhance not only your intellectual ability but also to achieve personal growth.

Colleges and universities are invited to nominate students for many of these highly competitive, meritbased awards for graduate study at campuses around the world. The caliber of Maryville students in the past and the quality of the undergraduate education you receive here is recognized throughout the Midwest and the nation. This program has been developed to identify Maryville students that are strong candidates and assist them in competing for these national awards. Students receive help from faculty members during the application process, so you will be well prepared to compete. Contact Dr. Dohrman to indicate your plans to apply for one of these programs!

How it Applies to Your Major

There are several degree programs at Oxford related to the sciences, such as Global Health, Medical Anthropology, Engineering Science, Physics. For instance, scholars can choose to do a M.Sc. in Global Health Science or in Medical Anthropology. Here is more information from the Rhodes’ Website FAQ: “I am a physics major, plan a career in physics, and have little interest whatsoever in government or politics, although I am very interested in some public issues. Can I still be considered? Answer: Absolutely. We look for people who will be leaders in any field. Leading physicists can certainly contribute as much to the world as leaders in more conventionally “public” professions. But, let me stress that the Rhodes Scholarships are not simply graduate fellowships at Oxford, intended to support the best physicists (or economists or historians or politicians or students of French literature) to come to Oxford. We are looking for the best physicists (or economists or historians or politicians or students of French literature) who are likely to make the most positive contributions to the world—broadly defined.
